For nearly six years I was a reporter at the Seattle Times newspaper. Since mid-2002 I've been a freelance journalist, writing about everthing from science, to skiing, to environmental issues, to athlete profiles. I'm a contributing editor at Outside and Runner's World magazines, and my work has appeared in publications ranging from the New York Times Sunday Magazine to Popular Mechanics, Scientific American, National Geographic, Ski, Men's Journal, Departures and others. I write frequently for the New York Times, including the Sunday Travel and Sunday Week in Review sections.

My writing has been selected six times to appear in the anthologies The Best American Travel Writing, The Best American Sports Writing and  The Best American Science & Nature Writing. In 2019 I'm an Alicia Patterson Fellow.

When I'm not somewhere else, I'm in north-central Washington.
